Our experienced dentists can restore teeth severely affected by tooth wear, large fillings and decay with a protective and aesthetically pleasing crown.
Our custom-made crowns are made with a variety of materials, including the gold standard in dental restorations, Zirconia.
What is a crown?
A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a natural tooth that has become compromised for reasons such as decay or damage (severe fractures, cracks, or chips).
Classed as an ‘advanced’ restoration, crowns are often used when a filling is not sufficient for restoring a tooth and protecting it from further damage in the future.
Crowns can also be used to restore the function and shape of the tooth so that the tooth’s durability, aesthetics, and strength are renewed.
How will a crown benefit me?
A new lease of life for your tooth
A crown has the capacity to prevent serious problems in the future (including tooth extractions). They are a valuable investment for your tooth, giving it the preservation and protection it needs to remain healthy.
Customised treatment process
Your Crown is made just for you – no one else. The entire planning and design process is focused on your unique oral anatomy, whilst the finished product is a natural-looking and seamless match for your smile.
Highly functional for biting and chewing
The materials we use are more than up to the task of supporting normal biting and chewing. With good care, a crown can last in excess of 10 years.
The crowns process
Step 1: Treatment preparation
At the first appointment, a full clinical examination (including X-rays) is performed. If it is determined that a crown is appropriate, 2 appointments will be required.
Step 2: Tooth preparation
Your tooth is shaped to receive the Crown once it is ready. A digital scan of your mouth or impressions is taken and sent away to our dental laboratory. A circumferential portion of the tooth is removed in order to accommodate the thickness of your new Crown. A temporary crown is fitted (so you won’t have to be without a functioning tooth whilst you wait for treatment to be completed).
Step 3: Your new crown is fitted
Our partner lab sends back the custom-designed Crown. Your dentist will cement it firmly in place with a strong dental adhesive.
We will meticulously check that the new Crown fits your tooth, the bite is correct, and its appearance is natural before the permanent Crown is bonded in place.
What are crowns made from?
Crowns can be made from a variety of materials. They can be made from composite, ceramic, gold, or metal alloys; the materials used will depend on which of your teeth requires attention and their function.
Crowns can also be made from a combination of these materials to maximise function and aesthetics.
Here at Lockswood Dental Practice, we often use an extremely durable and biocompatible material called Zirconia. This material tolerates daily wear and tear extremely well and possesses a translucency that almost identically resembles genuine tooth enamel.
Why choose us?
At Lockwood Dental Practice, our focus is on preventive dentistry. Much as we love to see our patients and care for their smiles, ideally, we want to make sure you’re not coming to us often for advanced restorative procedures.
Instead, we will help you aspire to keep advanced restorative procedures to a minimum so you can keep your natural teeth for as many years as possible.
We are a practice that keenly embraces digital dentistry; our impression-taking system is completely digitised, which is not only time-saving but also more comfortable for our patients.
We love the relationships we have built with our patients, and our team are respectful and kind and always looks forward to seeing you. The community feel of the practice is something we will always strive to nurture.
